about

I'm contemplating a classification called "Plain Music," though the name might change. Plain Music is a general term for music characterized by simplicity and minimalism in a positive sense. It includes features like ease of reproduction, straightforwardness, modesty, unpretentiousness, and accessibility. Plain Music might emerge from stripping down the philosophical aspects of genres like Ambient, merely playing pads with reverb, for example. It feels like casually creating something noise-like with whatever is at hand could also fall into Plain Music.

Examples include music created by copying a list of chord progressions, using only a Volca, a noise box, or just playing with sounds. It might be made with simple tools, or the inherent limitations of tools could inadvertently lead to Plain Music. It could be the type of music produced as a stepping stone in learning digital music production (DTM). It might be just the initial sounds produced when starting to use a tool or software. While these might seem like transitional phases, I want to classify and positively embrace these emerging forms under the umbrella of Plain Music.

Analog square wave oscillators can be made for as little as 2 to 300 yen. You can find such circuits by searching for "square wave circuit." These produce only a simple beep sound, but when combined with a resonator or an octaver, or when reverb is applied, they transform into a pleasant drone sound. It's a very simple sound source – if it can even be called that. However, I find something appealing about this simplicity. It's not necessarily about the sound being simple, but perhaps about the production methods and tools being straightforward. It feels like categorizing such methods and approaches could be interesting.

The noise box is one instrument and effect that I consider representative. It's easier to DIY compared to other instruments, and can be made inexpensively. I tried making one with a wooden box from Daiso. Its sound is intriguing, and as an electronic instrument, it easily integrates with effects.

The idea of using the term "Plain" for this music concept is very effective due to its simplicity and clarity. The word conveys meanings of "simple," "unadorned," and "unpretentious," indicating the music's direct and unembellished nature. Such naming succinctly expresses the music's simple yet appealing characteristics and clearly communicates its essence to the listener.

Moreover, "Plain" suggests the accessibility and universality of the music, potentially appealing to a broad audience. In this way, a simple and intuitive name is a good method for effectively communicating the characteristics of music.

The "Plain Music" category, focusing on simple and accessible music, will likely appeal to new listeners or those who prefer a more intuitive and relaxed experience over complex music. This classification could effectively broaden the diversity and accessibility of music.

The concept of "Plain Music" centers around the idea of using simple, minimalist production techniques to create accessible and universal music. This approach is particularly effective in music education and for beginners in music production.

Using the term "Plain Music" could be an interesting way to define a new movement or style that aims to simplify and popularize music. This approach could contribute to opening up music to more people and lowering barriers to entry in music production.
